Course of Multidisciplinary Medical SciencesHuman Health Science

About this department

At the Department of Laboratory Science, we strive to foster clinical technologists with a broad education, deep knowledge as medical specialists, and the latest skills to work effectively in the light of the recent rapid progress in the medical science and medical technologies in the fields of molecular and cellular biology, gene therapy, transplantation therapy, and regenerative medicine.

This department provides three courses, namely the “Basic Biomedical Pathology Data Analysis”, “Clinical Biomedical Pathology Data Analysis”, and “Information Technology and Medical Engineering” courses. We foster medical specialists with a wide range of knowledge and skills covering various life science fields, such as basic medical sciences, clinical medicine, genetic engineering, diagnostic imaging, and informatics, who can work internationally as effective researchers and educators.

1.Basic Biomedical Pathology Data Analysis

In the Basic Biomedical Pathology Data Analysis course, the students learn how to extract information from living bodies and analyze the basic physical and pathological data on the genetic, molecular, and tissue levels. These skills are required for developing the medical technologies for the biological information analysis applied to the studies of intractable diseases, transplantation therapy, and regenerative medicine. We provide education and research experiences to develop molecular diagnosis, cellular signal analysis, and morphological analysis technologies based on such biological information.

2.Clinical Biomedical Pathology Data Analysis

Along with the rapid progress in the fields of molecular biology and genetic engineering, highly advanced medical technologies for treating intractable diseases have developed drastically. In the Clinical Biomedical Pathology Data Analysis course, we provide education and research experiences required for experts of clinical testing supporting advanced medical fields, such as transplantation therapy, regenerative medicine, and genetic therapy.

3. Information Technology and Medical Engineering

Diagnostic imaging apparatus and imaging diagnostic skills using such devices are required for the biomedical data analysis supporting highly advanced medical care. Development and introduction of such diagnostic devices and technologies requires medical specialists with the knowledge and skills on medical engineering technology and informatics in addition to the knowledge on medical science and medical care. To foster such specialists, the Medical Engineering and Informatics course provides education and experiences in research and development, as well as the commercial application, of the latest technologies in the field of integrated medical engineering.

Characteristics

In medical care, the importance of clinical testing which is carried out for the diagnosis and treatment based on the patients’ biological information will continue to grow. At the Department of Laboratory Science, we provide education on the basic medicine and clinical medicine in accordance with the future progress and needs in medical science and strive to foster medical specialists (clinical technologists), who can:most effectively provide the biological information for medical care, develop new testing methods and devices and conduct research and provide education in wide fields.

Especially, through the Information Technology and Medical Engineering course, we strive to foster medical specialists, who can contribute to medical-engineering collaboration. Furthermore, we pursue our studies on health science to contribute to the promotion of health, prevention of diseases, and the people’s healthy life in cooperation with the Departments of Nursing, Physical Therapy, and Occupational Therapy.
