Orthopaedic Surgery
We are orthopedic surgeons who treat patients suffering from diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system. Most people experience knee, shoulder, or lower back pain at some point in their lives. Femoral or vertebral fractures are the second most common cause of elderly individuals becoming bedridden.
We believe that overcoming functional disabilities of the musculoskeletal system contributes not only to the well-being of individual patients but also to the welfare of society as a whole. Our goal is to enable everyone to move their bodies freely and without difficulty throughout their lives.
Research and Education
The Biomaterials Group has developed many orthopedic implants—especially bioactive ones—some of which have already been applied in clinical settings. The team is actively developing bioactive and antibacterial metal implants. The Biomechanics Group is working on the development of a new knee prosthesis using computer simulation technology and is also analyzing spinal biomechanics. The Tumor Group is researching the molecular mechanisms involved in the development of bone and soft tissue tumors, with the aim of applying these findings to clinical practice. Regenerative therapy for damaged musculoskeletal tissues is being advanced through collaboration with the Center for iPS Cell Research and Application (CiRA). A clinical trial for cartilage regeneration therapy using iPS cell technology to treat knee cartilage injuries is currently in preparation. The Cartilage Metabolism and Rheumatology Group is experimentally investigating the mechanisms of joint destruction in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The group is also developing novel therapies in collaboration with other departments and research institutes. The Peripheral Nerve Group is focused on nerve regeneration, including the clinical application of nerve conduits created from autologous cells using 3D printing technology.
