Michael Karin, Ph.D., is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of California San Diego (UC San Diego). Dr. Karin is a world authority on signal transduction pathways that regulate gene expression in response to extracellular stimuli, infection, and stress. His works led to understanding the mechanisms of JNK pathway and NF-B pathway. For these contributions, he was elected to the member of National Academy of Sciences (2005) and Institute of Medicine (2011). He was also awarded the William B. Coley Award for Distinguished Research in Basic Immunology (2013).
